Van Houzen sculptures are inspired from their natural habitats. They are primarily hand carved songbirds, but may include birds of prey and shorebirds, using Basswood exclusively. Each feather is carved in separately with hand chisels and textured with a pyrographic pen. The birds are painted with acrylics using a technique of washes and fine brush strokes to achieve softness and life-like characteristics. The legs are shaped from copper and bronze wire. Most carvings are set in their natural habitats. Bronze, copper and brass are used
to make these environments which are silver soldered. Many of the flowers, seeds, and berries are carved of wood. The free form bases are carved from Oak, Cherry, or Walnut.

Here is an exciting new website, DLM Gemstones, devoted to American made jewelry, hard to find with all the junk from overseas. Doris Miller has been creating jewelry for over 25 years. Working with natural materials and using different techniques such as beading, carving, wire wrapping, weaving, knotting and more, each piece is lovingly handcrafted. Each design is one-of-a-kind, never massed produced and all are Made in Texas, USA.
The designs use natural semi-precious gemstones instead of color altered stones. Nature never creates two natural gemstones exactly alike. Many semi-precious gemstones today have had their color altered by dye, heat treatment or irradiation and many of these “colored stones” are being passed off as other gemstones.
All of the components are quality grade items and not the more common "commercial grade" gemstones and pearls. The metal beads, clasps and findings are 14KT gold, gold filled, vermeil, Sterling Silver, copper & stainless steel.
