Once every ten years, if that, you find a really amazing supermarket. This one is in Cambridge, MA. The people there treat you as though you are in a small town grocery, friendly, helpful, patient. They answer questions, find things for you, bring you what you ask for. The store has a "loading your groceries set-up" that works seamlessly, under shelter. Young men are good natured and nothing gets rained on or snowed on. Brilliant.
The store is at 340 River Street in Cambridge, MA 02139. It is the first certified organic supermarket in Massachusetts and there's always a lot going on there. You can learn how to stretch your food budget, every Thursday, at 3PM by joining their instructive group "Shop For Value." Phone for details. You can reach out to hungry children by purchasing a bag called "Feed 100" for $29.99. This project, in conjunction with the World food Organization, feeds one child in Rwanda for one hundred meals. And you, the customer, have a zippered muslin shopping bag to carry home your groceries, kind of a nice idea these days when everyone is trying to go green, because you use one less paper or plastic bag.
The big event this October is their Halloween celebration with lots of happenings including a presentation on, Oct. 29, by chefs from the Chefs' Collaborative and local Massachusetts farmers. Great!

COFFEE-the COFFEE EXPERIENCE. Use the contact form to tells us about yours. This is Part One. We have tried various methods for making coffee including buying green beans, roasting them and of course brewing it. We found that successfully finding consistent quality in green beans was difficult. Sometimes they were great, sometimes not. Home roasting was a bit tedious but do-able provided the bean quality was high enough but it was discouraging when the quality was inconsistent. Sadly, an amateur could'nt tell beforehand. The next step was to try whole beans we could grind ourselves as needed. Clearly, this is a perfect way to get started on the road to delicious coffee. But you do need to be aware that unless the grinding mechanism can be immersed in water, you will be tasting the rancid smell that builds up over tiume as the oily residue accumulates in the grinder.
