A design for the future
The Honda P-Nut
Honda has the automotive world reeling with its futuristic P-Nut. .Conceived around a small “footprint” for maximum convenience in tight urban settings, P-NUT features a sleek exterior design that allows for a spacious and open interior with excellent visibility. The layout of the interior space, with its center driving position flanked by two rear seats, provides generous legroom for all occupants in a vehicle that has an exterior footprint similar to an ultra-compact car. The modular rear engine bay is designed to accommodate a wide variety of potential propulsion technologies including a conventional small displacement internal-combustion engine, a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, or a battery-electric power train.

A recent report citing Honda employment in the USA as the first Japanese automaker to build motor vehicles in the United States, Honda stats started with a small motorcycle sales office in Los Angeles in 1959, Honda now produces automobiles, power equipment, powersports, engines and jet aircraft.

The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) recently conducted a study on the economic contributions of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and all of its U.S. affiliate companies and associated retail operations for the calendar year 2007. The results show the impact that Honda has made over the past 50 years. Highlights of the study include:

* Almost 152,000 private sector jobs are a result of Honda’s direct employment in the United States. Associated wages and salaries are estimated to be $9 billion.

    * More than 215,000 private sector jobs are generated by Honda’s dealerships and Honda product-related retail employment in the United States. Their estimated associated wages and salaries are approximately $8 billion.

The two figures added together give a picture of the economic effect Honda has on employment in the USA:* More than 367,000 private sector jobs, and $17 billion in annual wages and salaries, are generated as a result of Honda’s total U.S. operations.

Honda became the first Japanese automaker to manufacture products in America when it opened its first U.S. plant in Marysville, Ohio. On Sept. 10, 1979, 64 Honda associates began producing the CR250 Elsinore off-road motorcycle in Marysville. The startup was so successful that Honda quickly announced plans to build an adjacent auto plant. The first Japanese auto plant in America, the Marysville Auto Plant started producing four-door Honda Accords in November 1982.

Over the past 30 years, Honda plants in Ohio have produced more than 13 million automobiles, 17 million engines, 1 million motorcycles, 2 million all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and nearly 13 million automatic transmissions.

Today, the Marysville Auto Plant produces the Honda Accord Sedan and Coupe models, and the Acura TL Sedan and Acura RDX crossover vehicle. The East Liberty Auto Plant opened 20 years ago in December 1989. In addition to the upcoming Accord Crosstour, the plant is the major production site in North America for the Honda CR-V and exclusively produces the Honda Element.

Honda's success at manufacturing quality products in Ohio set Honda's course to add more production in North America to meet increasing customer demand for Honda products. Utilizing its production systems and the skills of its associates to adjust quickly to changing market conditions, Honda's North American plants manufacture more than 80% of the passenger cars and light trucks that the company sells in America.

Earlier this year, Honda marked the 50th anniversary of doing business in America, keyed to the June 11, 1959 establishment of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Today, Honda operates nine major manufacturing facilities in America, working with 545 U.S. parts and material suppliers to produce more than 3 million products each year, including Honda and Acura automobiles, Honda all-terrain vehicles, general purpose engines and power equipment products. The company has two additional plants under construction in North Carolina, for the production of the HondaJet advanced light jet and GE Honda turbofan jet engines.

    * Honda has been manufacturing automobiles in America for over 25 years1, beginning with production of the Honda Accord in Marysville, Ohio, in 1982. Today, Honda continues that commitment to its local manufacturing capabilities.
o Nearly 76 percent of Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the U.S. are manufactured in North America.
o Honda now has 11 manufacturing plants in America, with two new plants under construction:
+ $100 million plant for production of the innovative HondaJet (2010) in Greensboro, North Carolina
+ $27 million fuel-efficient jet engine plant in Burlington, North Carolina.
o Employment of nearly 28,000 associates in manufacturing, R&D, sales and other operations
          o U.S. capital investment of $12.1 billion
o 545 suppliers in 34 states provide the parts and materials to assemble Honda and Acura product in the U.S. In 2008 Honda spent more than $17.5 billion in parts and materials purchased from its U.S. suppliers.

The 2010 Accord
Honda Accord
The Honda Accord on the Road
08/19/2009 - Torrance, CA -

Available as a sedan or a coupe, the Accord is designed to impress with a quality feel, engaging performance and accommodating technology.

The 2010 Honda Accord lineup receives new features on certain models Subtle modifications include graphically optimized climate control buttons.

"The Honda Accord offers something for a diverse range of people seeking anything from a comfortable family car to an aggressive coupe with looks and power," said Erik Berkman, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The feature changes to the 2010 Honda Accord elevates its appeal and supports a legendary reputation as a class leader for quality and customer satisfaction."

The Accord Sedan’s exterior offers a 6-sided grille, flared fenders and inset character lines sculpted into the sides of the body plus a longer hood, projector beam headlights and a sleek, lower-profile roofline.

Interior styling on all models has generous standard equipment, world-class ergonomics and intuitive vehicle controls. Available premium features include the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation1 System™ with Voice Activation and XM® Radio2 . The front seats are designed to provide generous lateral support and complement the Accord’s sporty side. The fold-down, lockable rear seatback increases cargo-carrying versatility and also includes a lockable pass-through for long items like snow skis.

New for 2010, a more-contrasting "lighter" gray color theme for the climate control buttons on all models helps to better differentiate the system controls in relation to nearby dark gray audio system buttons. Models equipped with the available dual-zone automatic climate control enhance the manual fan control override button to include on/off functionality with corresponding changes to the button graphic. For additional simplicity, the dual-zone activation button name changes to "SYNC" from "DUAL."

Available engine choices include a V-6 and a 4-cylinder engine. The 3.5-liter, 24-valve SOHC i-VTEC® V-6 engine produces 271-horsepower and takes advantage of Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology that can deactivate up to half of the cylinders while cruising to improve fuel economy. The VCM system contributes to an EPA city/highway fuel economy rating of 19/293 miles per gallon in the Accord Sedan V-6.

The performance-oriented Accord V-6 Coupe with 6-speed manual transmission exclusively has a 3.5-liter V-6 VTEC engine (without VCM, hence no "i" in VTEC) that offers an exclusive valvetrain, intake and exhaust system that broadens the torque curve in the low- to mid-rpm range.

A 190-horsepower 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine is standard in the Accord Sedan EX, EX-L and Accord Coupe LX-S, EX and EX-L. The 2.4-liter Accord Sedan LX and LX-P four-cylinder engine produces 177 hp and features a DOHC i-VTEC valvetrain system. When equipped with the available automatic transmission, both 4-cylinder engines achieve an EPA rating of 21/31miles per gallon3  city/highway.

Available transmissions include a 5-speed manual (standard with all 4-cylinder engines), a 5-speed automatic (available with all 4-cylinder engines and standard on V-6-powered models) and an available 6-speed manual transmission on the Accord Coupe EX-L V-6.

A brief ceremony attended by more than 1,000 Line 2 associates marked the start of mass production of the Accord in Alabama. The first Alabama-built Accord was a top-of-the-line EX-L model in Silver Metallic, equipped with leather interior and a navigation system.

The Accord is built in Alabama
Accord from Honda

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, LLC marked the start of production*  in July of the Accord V-6 Sedan today, utilizing the plant's flexible manufacturing system to meet customer demand for Honda's lineup of passenger cars and light trucks and ensure the most efficient use of Honda's manufacturing capacity in Alabama and throughout North America.

"The addition of the Accord V-6 Sedan in Alabama was a great challenge, but one that our associates have accomplished by working together with a single focus -- to build products of the highest quality for our customers," said Nobu Sanui, president and CEO of Honda's Alabama operations.

HMA is now the production source of four Honda vehicles: the Odyssey minivan; the Pilot sport utility vehicle; the Ridgeline pickup; and the Accord V-6 Sedan, as well as the V-6 engines that power each vehicle.

"The quick transfer of production of the Accord V-6 Sedan from Ohio to Alabama in a nine-month time period is a testament to Honda's production flexibility and confidence in our Alabama workforce," said Chuck Ernst, HMA senior vice president. "We are honored to add the Accord as the latest model in our production lineup."

08/03/2009 - TORRANCE, Calif. -

The TL performance luxury sedan continued to top the leaderboard for Acura, logging 3,309 sales, and despite low inventory, the top three Acura models posted month-over-month sales increases for July. Total Acura sales tallied 8,662 vehicles, down 32.5 percent* versus last July, while year-to-date sales slipped 33.8 percent** to 59,744 versus 2008, based on daily selling rates.

"Acura is gearing up for increased sales in the coming months by offering a dramatically enhanced 2010 lineup," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "The new V6 powered TSX performance sedan is just beginning to arrive at Acura dealers and the revamped turbocharged RDX crossover SUV, including a new two-wheel-drive model, will be arriving this month."

Low inventory of 2009 models hampered the sales of many Acura models, especially the RDX crossover SUV, which totaled 519 vehicles. The MDX luxury SUV moved into second position behind the TL, posting sales of 2,471 units, while the TSX was a close third with 2,232 vehicles registered.

Honda Recall-07/31/2009 - TORRANCE, Calif. -

An existing safety recall of the driver's airbag in certain 2001 Honda Accords and Civics due to a potential defect in the airbag's inflation system is being expanded to include more vehicles, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. Originally initiated in November 2008, approximately 440,000 additional vehicles are included in the expanded recall, which will require the replacement of the driver's steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator.

In some vehicles, airbag inflators can produce over-pressurization of the driver's (front) airbag inflator mechanism during airbag deployment. If an affected inflator deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator casing to rupture. Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants.

Registered owners of vehicles that potentially contain affected inflators will receive a recall notice in the mail over the next few months, with the owners of vehicles most likely to include a problem airbag being contacted first. The recall notice will include further instructions to help schedule a repair to each vehicle. Interested owners may confirm their vehicle's recall status by visiting the Honda "Owner Link" website at www.owners.honda.com/recalls or the Acura "My Acura" website at www.owners.acura.com/recalls. Only certain vehicles are affected, and concerned owners of 2001-2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and 2002-2003 Acura TLs are encouraged to wait to receive a recall notice in the mail before scheduling an appointment with their local dealer.
