March update for 2011, the Top ten vehicles assembled in the USA/Canada are listed on the table provided by the NHSTA:
Ford has three the Sport Trac 90%; the Mercury Mountaineer 85; the Explorer 85.
Chrysler has four, the Dakota 84; Avenger Sedan 83; and Grand Caravan 82; 200 Sedan 81
Toyota has 4, the Tundra, the Sequoia, the Camry, the Avalon all at 80.
GM has the Savana, at 80.
Chrysler has the Dodge Nitro, the Town and Country, at 80.
Honda has the Accord, at 80.
The numbers are submitted by the manufacturers themselves following DOT guidelines: ..."vehicle manufacturers must calculate the equipment content percentages for their car lines prior to the beginning of the model year. They estimate the number of vehicles and subgroups of vehicles that will be built within each car line, e.g., the number of base level and high-line models. For each car line, the calculation of U.S./Canadian content percentage also includes: 1. The U.S./Canadian content (by value) of each item of motor vehicle equipment that will be used to assemble the vehicles within the car line; 2. The total value of each equipment item, i.e., the price the manufacturer will pay for it (this information is typically provided by the manufacturer's suppliers); and 3. The total number of each of the equipment items that will be used to assemble the vehicles within the car line during the model year...." Download the complete statistics . American made tires are hard to find. Cheap imports dominate the market. Peter Woriskey writing in the Washington Post says: "The ballooning trade imbalance with China has provoked complaints that the relationship is crushing U.S. manufacturers. Critics of the relationship say China manipulates its currency and employs other protectionist policies that make it difficult for U.S. factories to compete.
Congress passed legislation in 2000 that allows the United States to impose tariffs and other protections if a surge in Chinese imports damages a U.S. industry.
